The Gospel In The 10 Commandments

And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.” - Exodus 20:1-3

It doesn’t say, “If you have no other gods before me, I’ll bring out out of the land of Egypt.”

“I am God. I saved you already. Now worship me alone.”

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. - Eph. 2:8-10

  1. One Response to “The Gospel In The 10 Commandments”

  2. That order is an absolutely uncompromisable distinction.

It is the difference between man-centered performance and God-centered grace. It is the difference between no gospel at all and the gospel of the glory of God’s grace.

God commands of us what is most sensible given who He is, what He’s done, what He will do - and this command to us is also the best thing for us. Worshiping God alone will satisfy our souls alone and will glorify God alone.

“You shall have no other gods before me.” is like God saying, “You shall not settle for anything less than the most satisfying gift of all - ME.”
