Kill The Facebook Ads

July 3, 2008 – 10:19 pm

Stop looking at those sketchy ads on Facebook.  They’re not going to help you find a wife (or a husband).  They are going to tempt you.

Flee from sexual immorality. - 1 Cor 6:18

How?  Block them all.

0. You need Firefox.  Get it here.

1. Go here and install Greasemonkey by clicking the green “Add To Firefox” button.  It will let you install tiny little scripts to modify webpages.  Restart Firefox.

2. Go here and click the black “Install This Script” box on the top right.

EDIT: That script adds an annoying “+” to all your pictures.  Use my version of it here.

EDIT 2:  Kill Xanga ads too: Here’s a script that should work reasonably well.

Should take you less than 3 minutes.

  5. Here’s a script I just hacked together for Xanga. It’s mostly just trial-and-error. It removes ads from your xanga and ray’s old xanga, which I believe means it works on most xanga configurations? There’s a chance that it breaks things that I haven’t tested it with. No “formal validation” or anything :-). Sorry.

  8. I’m curious as to why those are the ads that are targeting you… mine are all about system administrator positions and such — maybe some experimentation with the “Interests” field is in order?

  9. They’re picking up on our “Religious Views: Christian” and our “Relationship Status: Single” and giving us dating websites with “hot Christian singles”, etc. (and the corresponding pictures, of course)
