don’t send things to all the listservs. You should only do that when it’s relevant to everyone on the listserv

[redacted]

If so, then for the sake of the Gospel – and the rest of us – you should install this Greasemonkey script. Actually, even if you haven’t, you probably should install it anyway – it’s always good to think twice about who you send email to. It will bug you every single time you click “Reply to all” in Gmail, so you’ll never unwittingly send an email to 3000 people without meaning to.

0. You need Firefox. Get it here.

1. Go here and install Greasemonkey by clicking the green “Add To Firefox” button. It will let you install tiny little scripts to modify webpages. Restart Firefox.

2. Go here and click the black “Install This Script” box on the top right.

Firefox 3 came out today. If you don’t use Firefox, you should give it a try. Why? Apparently it’s supposed to be up to 7 times faster than Internet Explorer. And if you do have Firefox 2, you should upgrade – this is supposed to be ~3 times faster. Learn about it and download it at getfirefox.com.

To go along with that, you should install Google Gears. Gears lets you run certain web applications offline – most importantly Google Docs! Now you can have all of your Documents, Spreadsheets, and Presentations available and editable from anywhere. You could probably live without MS Office or OpenOffice installed now. Other significant Gears-enabled apps include Google Reader (an RSS reader) and Remember The Milk (a todo list application with a gmail plugin) – I use both and find both very helpful.

If you have any questions or need any help, let me know.

Somehow I missed this… A few days ago, Google released their Charts API. The basic premise is: you configure a URL in a certain way, and you get an image of a chart. Perfect for displaying data on a website. I’ve had several projects where I needed something like this, and always had to go about installing my own tools. Often those tools are cumbersome and ugly. This seems to work much better!

For example, the following code snippet will show you the total unique visitors to this website over the last few days:

http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?chs=400x250
&chd=s:FIDBKWI
&cht=lc
&chxt=x,y
&chxl=0:|12/11|12/12|12/13|12/14|12/15|12/16|12/17
&chxr=1,0,61
&chtt=Absolute+Unique+Visitors

Pretty cool, eh?

I’ve learned much from Dr. John Piper. One area in which he has, until now, NOT been able to teach me about is how to best use Google and take advantage of their tools. That has changed.

First, let me commend to you this post by Piper on Desiring God’s blog and give you the following snippet:

Have you ever wondered how you will do in the hour of final trial? The gunman has you in his sights and asks, “Are you a Christian?” Here is a strong word to give you hope that you may do better than you think.

“If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you” (1 Peter 4:14).

This encouragement from Peter says that in the hour of unusual threat (whether insult or death) there will be “a Spirit of glory and of God resting on us.” Doesn’t that mean that God gives special help in the hour of crisis to those who suffer because they are Christians? I don’t mean he is absent from our other sufferings. I just mean that Peter went out of his way to say to those who suffer “for the name of Christ” will experience a special “resting” on them of “the Spirit of glory and of God.”

This may account for some of the astonishing testimonies of martyrs.

Second, look at where that link he has points. To Google Book Search. More specifically, to a complete version of a book by a dead guy (Baxter) on Google Book Search. And it has a downloadable PDF to go with it.

So yeah… go play with it. I just found:

The Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin
